Xavier University Accreditation and State Authorization
Accreditation at a Glance
Institutional Accreditation
Xavier University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Xavier was first accredited in 1925, and its accreditation by the HLC was most recently reaffirmed in 2021.
HLC accreditation is a key indicator of Xavier’s quality and affirms the university’s ability to fulfill its educational mission in a way that is ethical and sustainable. Accreditation also enables Xavier to access federal grants, including federal student financial aid.
Nursing Accreditation
State Authorization
Xavier University participates in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements as an approved Ohio NC-SARA institution. Through this participation, Xavier is authorized to offer distance education programs to students located in all states except California, which does not participate in SARA. As an accredited, nonprofit postsecondary educational institution, Xavier is exempt from California regulations related to the licensing of online postsecondary education offered to California residents, allowing Xavier distance education programs to be offered in the state.
Program availability may still be affected by state regulations and program-specific requirements. This is particularly important for nursing programs, which are also subject to the rules and regulations of the boards of nursing in the states and territories where students reside.
Review State Authorization information for current program availability and state-specific requirements.
Professional Licensure and Certification
Professional licensure and certification requirements vary by state, territory, profession, and program. Completing an academic program is typically only one part of the licensure process. Additional requirements may include examinations, supervised clinical experiences, coursework or training, background checks, fees, work experience, or other requirements established by the applicable licensing board or agency.
Students considering a program that leads to professional licensure or certification should review the requirements for the state or territory where they intend to practice. Licensing boards and agencies make the ultimate determination about whether an individual meets the requirements for licensure or certification.
Xavier University cannot guarantee the ability to earn any professional license or certification, in any field, in any state or territory.
